Not that book

I’m reading on the couch and Stazi hauls herself up next to me and climbs into my lap.

“Boog, Dada.”

Recently she’s been pulling paperbacks off the shelf and lining them up in the middle of the living room floor, and she holds one of them up. It’s The Exorcist.

“Rea mi!”

“Stazi, this is not a good book for us. Why don’t you get one of your books?”

“DADA REA NAH!”

“OK, uh, … When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to sever the bonds that have held them to another and to... uh...”

Stazi turns a page.

“To bring forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights; that chief among these are life, liberty, and property;”

Stazi turns more pages.

“That, a well-regulated militia being essential, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be abridged; that Congress shall pass no ex post facto law, nor shall excessive bail be set, nor cruel and unusual punishment, uh, assigned;”

Stazi turns a bunch of pages.

“That Congress shall be empowered to grant letters of marque and reprisal; that… government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not languish;”

Stazi turns about 50 pages.

“That a house divided against itself cannot stand; that this house will not fall, but it will become entirely one thing or the other; either... uh...”

Stazi turns to the last page of the book.

“That before this decade is out, we will land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth; that yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater is not free speech; that you will not crucify us upon a cross of gold; a chicken in every pot; and furthermore, Carthage must be destroyed.”

She scooted down off my lap, said “Tanks Dada,” and went to look for something to eat and/or smear on the TV.
