The tiny screw holding my glasses frames together on the left side came out today for about the fifth time in as many weeks. I hope this isn't a sign that they need to be replaced. Maybe I can get away with just replacing the screw.

These particular frames are about five years old now. The last time I had my prescription changed at the optometrist's office, I asked them to just put the new lenses in the old frames. The technician carefully inspected the frames, shook her head slightly and made a "tsk tsk" sound, and told me sternly that with a prescription as strong as mine, I should really have a backup pair of glasses, especially if I'm going to continue to wear this old pair of frames. Unspoken subtext: "Because they are likely to fall apart any second." She also warned me that there was a possibility they could be damaged, due to brittleness and age, when they put the new lenses in. I told her to give it the old college try.

Anyway, the lenses went in with no problems, and I'm still wearing my same old pair of frames, but now they're falling apart on me about once a week. I hope they can be fixed. The reason I've kept them for so long is that I really like them, and the last time I was at the optometrist, I didn't see any frames even remotely as good.

I know I should have a backup pair of glasses, but, well, I don't. I used to have a pair of prescription sunglasses that would work in a pinch, but they were stolen from my car about six months ago. I hope the thief has vision of -5.25 diopters in the left eye and -4.75 in the right, or they aren't going to do him much good.

In other news, winter weather has arrived here in central Ohio. We had THE BIG SNOW!!!11!!! a couple of nights ago, complete with panicked weather forecasts on the nightly news, scrolling beeping weather alerts on TV all night, and grocery stores jammed with people buying toilet paper and milk. Net result: about 3 inches of snow. It did close a few schools down for a day, though, so I guess all that milk and TP would have come in handy.

There's still a bunch of snow on the ground, so I guess it's time to go buy Zeke some snow boots. Stazi is destined to always have a pair of Zeke's outgrown snow boots, I'm afraid. One of these years, just in the sake of fairness, we should get Zeke a bright pink sparkly pair of Hello Kitty snow boots. But this will probably not happen.

My glasses used to do that too. Try putting a drop of superglue on top of the screw. It won't keep them from totally falling apart, but it will keep the screw from falling out as often.

Your next pair of totally fabulous glasses are out there waiting for you. Trust me. I've done the same thing as you, for slightly sillier reasons: my younger daughter wouldn't stop pulling on my glasses. The last family photo we had, she was 4 1/2, and my glasses are unbelievably crooked, because she kept yanking them off my face and bending them. Yes, they finally broke. I am happy to say I managed to hang on to the old ones until the yanking stopped, and my newer ones are mostly straight.
You just need to find the right glasses store. It's out there.
Good luck!
