September 20, 2005

I always get frustrated with the weather around this time of year in the Midwest. The blistering, sweltering heat of summer is nothing but a memory, but it's not really quite cool enough to be fall yet, either. The weatherman on the radio this morning said that Thursday was supposed to be "absolutely beautiful" and then said that the high would be 86.

Excuse me, but in late September, an "absolutely beautiful" day does not include a high of 86 degrees. No, no, no. What we want is a high of like maybe 65, cloudy skies, and a light breeze. Maybe some off-and-on drizzle, and a slow steady flutter of gold and scarlet leaves coming down from the treetops.

I guess I'll just have to wait until October.

Speaking of which, I got motivated earlier this month and went to the fabric store to buy fabric and patterns for the kids' Halloween costumes. The sewing machine has been sitting idle for the past several months -- partially because it is located in our un-air-conditioned attic room, which attained Saudi Arabia-like temperatures over the summer -- and I thought it might be fun to do some easy costumes for the kids. After a surprisingly quick three or four days of work, I actually have Stazi's costume mostly finished. I just have to close the back opening and stitch the hat pieces together. She's going to be a little witch. Zeke will be a dinosaur, and I haven't started his yet, but I am optimistic at this point that I can get it done well before Halloween.

Every time I ask him what color dinosaur he wants to be, he says purple. I think I'm going to stop asking him in the hopes that he forgets purple is even an option. Which in fact it is not.

Sam's dinosaur costume is green with purple up the middle of the back and on the tail. Maybe you could compromise? :-) Purple claws? Purple spikes?
