Happy now?

This entry is specifically for my brother-in-law, who has been hounding me mercilessly about posting pictures of our front garden patch. FINE! FINE, HERE YOU GO! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW, HUH HUH ARE YOU?

Ahem. First a little history on the front yard. We thought it would be nice to plant some flowers out there this year, so I got some flats of annuals and stuck them in the front in two cute little red and white rows. Very nice. Very attractive. While I was at the garden center, though, I saw this nifty little Jiffy Pot pumpkin kit for kids. It was just a little paper cup, a peat pot, and three pumpkin seeds. Cool, I thought. I'll do this with Zeke. I got one that had three sunflower seeds also.

So we planted the little sunflower and pumpkin seeds in their little jiffy pots, and watched them grow. Only two of the pumpkin seeds actually germinated, but we did get all three of the sunflowers. After awhile the sunflowers were big enough to transplant into a pot, so I did, and sent it with Zeke to school for show and tell day. Then they outgrew the pot and I put them in the yard. Where they promptly grew, and grew, and grew. They are now taller than me. And Keith. And any living human being I have ever met. One of them got overbalanced and fell over, but we still have two left.

Then there are the pumpkins. I stuck the two pumpkin plants in the very back of our flower patch, thinking they could fill up the empty area back there. Boy, did they. They filled it up, and then they took over the front rows of flowers, and then they took over the grass in the front yard, and now they are climbing up the steps of our front porch. I am thinking pretty soon they are going to start demanding cable television and a place to sleep, at which point I plan to charge them rent.

Anyway. The best part of all this is that we actually have some pumpkins growing out there. The landlord came by the other day to spruce up the place (they're trying to rent the other side of our duplex) and said, "Holy crap, are those watermelons?" (Immature pumpkins are green.) No, we said, those are pumpkins. He said, "Cool. Um, how do I mow around these?"

So we sort of moved the front line of vines back into the flower patch, or tried to anyway. The whole thing still looks crazy out of control. But dammit, we are going to have pumpkins. So here for your viewing enjoyment is our pumpkin patch, courtesy of Mommy and Zeke:
